It just also has to be said this is a cycle which we praise when it works well as a system but when it fails we make it the individual’s own shortcomings. Patrick, and many other men and women, see a mother as one figure and a father as another. Conservatives have been specifically prickly to changing the pecking order and roles. But if we don’t have flexibility and understanding of the roles for a cohesive functioning, we stop functioning—just not normally to this specific horrible outcome. Redefining fatherhood and adding more flexibility in the roles needs to be seen as a positive thing for masculinity rather than as a threat or demeaning and we just haven’t had the ability to update our character roles enough. It’s not Patrick’s fault he didn’t know how to handle this; most people don’t. It’s a tragic situation all around.

This is excellent and thank you for sharing. I hear nuance throughout the post, and that’s refreshing to see. As a therapist, I’ve been focused on the therapy-related ways she was let down, and it’s been difficult to find someone explaining how messy *everything* was in this case . I appreciate your perspective.
